More Innovative Boss Mechanics

While I’m not a huge fan of Lost Ark‘s over-the-top story and vibe overall, there’s just no denying that it brought a lot of fun new things to the ARPG table, including interesting boss mechanics that went beyond just DPS checks. That’s the thing about Diablo 4; most of the bosses, and especially the world bosses, really just feel like DPS checks.

This season of Marvel Snap is an exciting one for a couple of reasons: all of the new card releases are actually exciting and have a ton of potential, and two out of three cards will be releasing directly to Series 4, which means they’ll only cost 3,000 Tokens to purchase. Spider-Ham was the first of these direct-to-Series-4 cards, and he’s just dropped this week, but there’s an issue. If you’ve been hoarding your Collector’s Caches and Reserves and you’re close to opening another Series 4 card, and you’re hoping to pull Spider-Ham from one of these boxes, you’re out of luck.

Ever since High Evolutionary released in Marvel Snap, it quickly took over the meta as control and lockdown cards came back into the spotlight. The idea here is to control a lane with Storm and Cyclops or Nebula, while using Spider-Man to lock your opponent out of another lane on turn 5.

Ever since its global launch, Second Dinner has started releasing various cosmetics and cards bundles in Marvel Snap. Most of these bundles are generally pretty good value, allowing you to get a bunch of Tokens, Gold, Credits, and sometimes cool new variants to add to your collection. There have been pricier bundles as well, but generally, these bundles also offered decent value, such as the Flaviano Collector package, which offered a whole ton of Tokens to help you nab whatever card you wanted in the Spotlight shop.

However, the latest bundle featuring Darkhawk has drawn a ton of ire from the player base. Right now, the Darkhawk bundle comes with a new variant, an avatar, 310 boosters, and 1,000 Credits. Priced at $29.99, this bundle has also been advertised with a small banner that states “3x value”, when in actuality, this is one of the worst deals we’ve seen in Marvel Snap so far.

Marvel Snap gets a lot of things right. The frictionless deck-building, the gorgeous 3D animations and art, the fast-paced, snappy matches that you can knock out in five minutes or less… Marvel Snap stands out from the competition because of how quickly you can get through a match, making it the perfect pick up and play game, while also retaining a sense of depth that’s crucial for its longevity.

Enter Conquest Mode, which is Marvel Snap’s brand new game mode that allows players to battle each other, tournament-style, to earn new cosmetic rewards and farm Medals, which can be used to purchase more rewards and currencies. Conquest Mode is based off the previously released Battle Mode, which were friendly battles that locked you into one deck, and you had to continuously battle the same opponent with the same deck until your health was depleted.

It’s been a big year for The Last of Us. With two successful and critically acclaimed games under its belt, the franchise went on to get a TV series adaptation which aired on HBO earlier this year. That also proved to be a huge hit, with largely positive ratings and a quick renewal for season 2. While most might have dismissed Apple TV as a streaming service in an age where the streaming service has been ruled over by big players like Netflix and Hulu, there are tons of gems in Apple’s library that you’ve probably already heard about. Mythic Quest and Dickinson are some of the better-known shows on Apple TV, and you’ve likely heard of the soccer comedy Ted Lasso.

Season 3 has come to a close, offering viewers plenty of closure for every character on the show. Still, even if we might not get to spent anymore time with AFC Richmond, it’s still fun to look back on the cast and think on what about them appeals to us the most. The main cast of characters is incredibly fun and diverse, all packed with unique personalities that complement each other and even serve as foils to one another.

You can’t really talk about the JRPG genre without at least mentioning Persona at this point. The series has carved a name out for itself in the industry by melding the dungeon-crawling, turn-based JRPG combat system with a fun dating/life sim element that progresses along a rather strict timed schedule. There’s nothing quite like it, but here are a few games like Persona if you’re looking for something similar.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Digimon in general has a a bit in common with Persona, and Cyber Sleuth is clearly inspired by the popular JRPG series. With a bright and vibrant art style, you assume the role of an amateur hacker who discovers the ability to battle and capture Digimon.

First there was Magik. Then there was Negative. After that, we had Leader and Leech, followed by Aero. And for a spell there, Thanos and Shuri also took the spotlight. Throughout all of this, though, Galactus has somehow remained untouched since the introduction of the Token Shop, and that archetype has been so polarizing among the Marvel Snap player base that Second Dinner has finally decided to do something about it.

In this week’s major patch, we’re getting Conquest Mode, Weekend Missions, along with a few store updates. We’re also getting big balance changes to Galactus, who’s finally getting a much-needed nerf to circumvent the polarizing and, honestly, emotionally damaging play style of destroying all other locations to force you into a single lane.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a brand new fantasy RPG from Atlus. Specifically, it’s a new RPG being headed up by director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro, all Persona and Shin Megami Tensei veterans. From the brief footage we’ve seen so far, the game looks like a culmination of all the lessons the team has learned from their two tentpole series over the past decade, and there’s a lot to be excited about. So let’s take a deep dive into the trailer itself, and discuss a few details you probably missed in the Metaphor: ReFantazio trailer.

There’s a Calendar System

My first impression of Metaphor: ReFantazio was that it was going to be the closest thing to a Persona game that Shin Megami Tensei fans would finally enjoy, and it’s clear that Atlus is planning on incorporating a lot of Persona-isms into this one, including a calendar system. In the trailer, we got a glimpse of the protagonist running through the open-world, and at the side of the screen, we see the day, time, and temperature.

It’s been a big week for Persona and Atlus fans. The studio announced a brand new game in Metaphor: ReFantazio, a new Persona 5-based tactics game, and finally, a proper remake of Persona 3. Titled Persona 3 Reload, the short announcement trailer showed off improved character models and visuals, and it’s definitely going to be exciting finally returning to Iwatodai in full HD glory. That said, here are three features and improvements we’d love to see in Persona 3 Reload.

Improved Dungeons

For the love of all that is good and holy, please let there be some sort of improvement to the way the dungeons are handled in Persona 3 Reload. If you’ve ever played any iteration of Persona 3, you’ll know that Tartarus –the main tower dungeon of the game– is an awful slog.

I guess we’ll start with a bit of a history lesson. Before Persona, there was Shin Megami Tensei, an offshoot of the Megami Tensei series that dealt with teenagers in modern Japan who were usually faced with cataclysmic events that threatened to tear apart the entire world. Persona originated as an offshoot of SMT, and the first two games still leaned heavily into the darker tones of SMT, but with Persona 3, everything changed.

All of a sudden, the Persona series had become synonymous with school life and dating sims, strong character-driven stories, and never-ending debates about who the best waifu was. Persona 3 started that trend, Persona 4 solidified it, and with the release of Persona 5, it’s become abundantly clear that Atlus knows they’ve got something good here and they’re gonna keep rolling with it.

Fable

The Fable reboot was announced back in 2020, but we’re finally getting our first look at the brand new entry. The trailer itself still doesn’t give us much info about its gameplay elements or story, but you can’t deny the charm of British actor Richard Ayoade, who does a great job of showing us the world and all of its fantastical elements.

FromSoftware’s Souls series has carved out such a huge name for itself in video games at this point, that it’s hard to walk two steps without hearing the word “Souls-like” or some comparison to the Dark Souls whenever a new action RPG gets announced. Lords of the Fallen

Lords of the Fallen is one of the most direct offshoots of the Souls series, and it’s a direct representation of the genre that the series created. The title uses almost the exact same systems as Dark Souls, tasking players with exploring a series of massive interconnected environments. A methodical, tactical combat system will immediately feel familiar to a Souls fan, and the game uses a similar risk and reward system for experience, with a bit of a twist. Basically in Lords of the Fallen you have a multiplier that increases as you hit enemies with combos and avoid using checkpoints. The multiplier dictates how much experience you get, and if you die you’ll return to the last checkpoint losing all of your experience, and respawning enemies. You’ll need to beat a timer to retrieve your experience, so you can’t just go back at your own pace.

There’s still plenty to do even after you’ve beaten the main story campaign of Diablo 4. In fact, most longtime fans might say this is where the real game begins. If you’re at a bit of a loss, here are seven things to do after beating Diablo 4 and entering the post-game and endgame sections.
